As the leading oil crop after palm, increasing the production and productivity of soybean may help reduce the ever-increasing price of oil and other soy products. Soybean plays a very important role in ensuring sustainable cropping systems and soil fertility management through its inherent capacity to fix atmospheric Nitrogen. The very low crop productivity is a major problem farmers face in Africa. Among the major factors for the low yields are limited availability of high-yielding, nutritionally dense, climate-resilient, and well-adapted soybean improved varieties, and the slow rate of replacing old varieties with new, high-yielding and well-adapted varieties, primarily due to the limited capacity of public and private soybean breeding programs in Africa. The program also operates in Western and Central Africa, with its main base at the IITA HQ in Ibadan, Nigeria, partnering with the national programs of Nigeria, Benin, Mali, and Ghana. The program also indirectly supports other countries, i.e., Sudan, Togo, C\u00f4te d&#8217;Ivoire, Liberia, Burkina Faso, by supplying seeds of the released varieties and elite genotypes.
