{"id":12023,"date":"2026-06-09T18:27:08","date_gmt":"2026-06-09T18:27:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.iita.org\/staff\/teeken-bela\/"},"modified":"2026-10-23T14:58:52","modified_gmt":"2026-10-23T14:58:52","slug":"teeken-bela","status":"publish","type":"staff","link":"https:\/\/iita.org\/fr\/staff\/teeken-bela\/","title":{"rendered":"Teeken, Bela"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span data-ogsc=\"black\" data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">B\u00e9la Teeken is Program Lead for Gender, Youth and Social Inclusion at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and currently serves as Interim Country Representative for Benin and Head of the IITA Benin Station.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div>\r\n<p><span data-ogsc=\"black\">He has an interdisciplinary background with an MSc thesis in rural development sociology and another in agronomy\/plant physiology from Wageningen University. He worked briefly on grassroots innovations with the NGO SRISTI in India and subsequently conducted transdisciplinary PhD research at Wageningen University on African rice cultivation in Ghana and Togo, examining interactions among rice diversity, agroecology, culture and farmer seed innovation.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div>\r\n<p><span data-ogsc=\"black\">His work examines how social, cultural, institutional and ecological contexts shape agricultural innovation and how these insights can strengthen research and technology development. Working at the interface of natural and social sciences, he seeks to better connect technical innovation with the realities, knowledge and priorities of the people who use it.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div>\r\n<p><span data-ogsc=\"black\">A major focus of his research is making crop breeding and seed systems more demand-led and socially inclusive. He works with breeders, food scientists, seed-system specialists and social scientists on gender-responsive breeding, participatory varietal testing, citizen science, trait preferences, food product quality and consumer preferences. His work has contributed particularly to the development and application of the triadic comparison of technologies (tricot) approach and to strengthening feedback between farmers, processors, consumers, seed systems and breeding decisions.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div>\r\n<p><span data-ogsc=\"black\">More broadly, he leads and contributes to research on gender equality, youth and social inclusion within IITA\u2019s Systems Transformation research, with an emphasis on linking technical innovation with the social innovations and institutional arrangements needed for equitable and sustainable impact. A particular interest is integrating research with delivery, treating development interventions as platforms for learning, adaptation and knowledge generation in rapidly changing social, technological and climatic contexts. This includes co-design and horizontal communication with communities, inclusive scaling, and attention to both intended and unintended consequences of innovation.
