Patrick Ongom Obia is from Uganda, he is an associate scientist and a cowpea molecular breeder based at IITA Kano, Nigeria. He holds a PhD in Plant Genetics and Breeding from Purdue University USA, a BSc. Agriculture and MSc. Plant Breeding and Seed System, both from Makerere University Kampala. During his PhD study, Patrick defined the genetic features of the first sorghum MAGIC population and using such a novel population to unravel the genomic regions conditioning drought tolerance and agronomic traits. He was the recipient of the 2013 John Axtell and 2015 Rotary global grant scholar Awards in recognition of his excellence as a Plant Breeding graduate student while at Purdue University. Before joining IITA, Patrick was the research team leader and graduate instructor at Makerere university Regional Center for Crop Improvement (MaRCCI), where he developed product profiles and breeding pipelines for cowpea and sorghum and supervised several graduate students. \u00a0His research at IITA is focused on development and deployment of molecular tools to accelerate improvement and delivery of high yielding and stress resilient cowpea varieties for the dryland regions of sub-Saharan Africa.
