Every year, on the occasion of International Women’s Day, IITA–CGIAR organizes a special event that stands as a testament to the remarkable contributions of women in agriculture, research, and innovation. This year, the celebration commenced with a purposeful walk, setting the tone for the day. The event was further enriched by inspiring testimonies from women staff and farmers, underscoring the profound impact of IITA’s investments in their careers and lives.

During the event, the Head of People and Culture, Lilian Mendoza, celebrated women who continuously drive progress in their unique ways and make history. She emphasized that women should be celebrated every day, not only on 8 March.
Deputy Director General, Partnerships for Delivery, Kenton Dashiell, representing IITA Director General Siméon Ehui, reiterated IITA’s and the DG’s steadfast commitment to empowering women and enhancing their presence in decision-making roles within the Institute. He underscored the DG’s pride in IITA’s progress in empowering women and encouraged sustained support and mentorship for women colleagues, ensuring equal opportunities for success.
Following the DG’s address, the Agribusiness Hub Manager at IFAD-Agrihub, Waheed Oni, highlighted how Jeunes agripreneurs de l'IITA (IYA) programs have invested in women to enhance their livelihoods. He emphasized that IYA is breaking stereotypes and elevating women’s economic status through training, access to credit, and market opportunities. “IYA programs have been led by women in the last ten years. We have 87 staff across seven countries in Africa with 51% women, and 388,504 beneficiaries of the program with 47% women,” he said.
A playlet by the Bioscience team showcased the benefits of empowering the girl child, aligning with the day’s theme, “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress.”
In a panel session, Food Safety Scientist Titi Falade, Associate Social and Gender Scientist Bela Tekeen, I-Youth Project Business Success Manager Eniola Olanrewaju, Project Management Specialist Oyewale Abioye, and Farm Manager Theresa Olusola shared their insights on accelerating progress towards gender equity at IITA and CGIAR. They discussed various topics, including the theme of the celebration, additional investments needed in women in agriculture, and actions men and women can take to inspire progress.
Mendoza outlined the vision of the IITA mentorship program for women, highlighting its inclusivity and accessibility. Video documentaries showcasing the experiences of IITA women staff and farmers testified to the Institute’s significant impact on their careers and livelihoods.

Concluding the event, the People and Culture Manager, Lade Oke, thanked participants for celebrating women and commended IITA’s senior leadership for their continuous investment in women.
