In the global efforts to combat hunger, poverty, and environmental degradation in Africa, IITA stands as a pioneering force. Operating as a vital component of the CGIAR system, IITA has been steadfast in its mission since its inception in 1967. The Institute has been working alongside a diverse network of international, regional, and national collaborators, ceaselessly striving to uplift livelihoods, enhance food and nutrition security, strengthen employment opportunities, and safeguard the integrity of natural resources.
In a recent display of resolute dedication to this cause, IITA, Mohammed IV Polytechnic University (UM6P), et the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) have formalized their commitment through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This landmark agreement lays the foundation for developing a One CGIAR Capacity Development Hub at UM6P, indicating a new era of collaborative advancement.
The essence of the MoU lies in the convergence of shared objectives between the involved entities. It establishes a cooperative framework aimed at establishing the One CGIAR Develop Hub at UM6P, emphasizing targeted cooperation in specific domains. These domains include extensive research in agriculture to fortify the stability, productivity, sustainability, and adaptive resilience of food systems in the face of a changing climate. The agreement also highlights the facilitation of PhD training and post-doctoral fellowships and the implementation of robust approaches to delivering, extending, and scaling agricultural technology transfer. The MoU also underscores the importance of fostering partnerships and collaborations with various African agricultural research and innovations (AARI) organizations.
The primary purpose of the MoU is to articulate the collective understanding and willingness of all parties to evaluate the intrinsic merits of the project. Additionally, the agreement seeks to instigate and facilitate a joint preliminary study and due diligence process pertaining to the project. This collaborative exploration is intended to lay the groundwork for a comprehensive outline of the general intentions shared by the parties with regards to the project’s execution.
Functioning as a pivotal framework, the MoU signifies the cooperative aspirations of the CGIAR centers operating in Africa and a pivotal milestone in the potential expansion of collaborative opportunities with UM6P. It stands poised to open many doors for joint endeavors in agriculture and beyond, promising a future marked by enhanced collaboration, innovation, and sustainable development.
