BSF decentralized units established in Adeiso, Somanya and Kumasi. The project supported farmers in the eastern region and the Ashanti region to establish the Decentralized Units, a small and simplified building for mass production of the BSF larvae and Frass for use in their farms and for sale. With the support of BNARI, the project has trained agripreneurs and youth to undertake the mass production of the BSF products and supplied them with start-up kits to start the production.
Ghana: Establishment of the BSF Processing facility at Kofisah in Nsawam.
To scale up the production of the Black Soldier Fly products, the BBEST project has established its centralized unit. It employed members from the Kofisah community where the processing unit is established and adjoining towns trained them to support with the mass production of the BSF products. The products from the centralized unit will be sold to smallholder chicken, fish pig and vegetable farmers in the Kofisah and the adjoining communities. As a climate smart technology, the BBEST project facility in Ghana is equipped with solar system and run on a hybrid electricity system and reduce electricity cost. As part of its activities, the project is conducting research for optimization of the BSF systems for improved quantity and quality production, including feed safety and standards requirements and increased profitability, new local substrates and nutritional components samples were shipped to NIBIO and IMR for more advanced analysis. Duplication of analyses locally are ongoing at National approved laboratories. Research on the growth rate of animals (Pigs, Chicken, Quails, and Fish). Research on vegetables production with BSF frass is also on going in Ghana. Through the BBEST project, a standard on animal feed titled “animal feeding stuff – specification for dried insect products for compounded animal feed” has been developed to guide the production of the BSF products
