
On 8 March, the Central Africa Hub of IITA joined in the global celebration of International Women’s Day with a series of events aimed at empowering women and supporting local communities. The celebrations were observed by various stations within the hub, each contributing to the theme of “Investing in women: Accelerating progress.”
In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the day began with a thought-provoking video conference in Kinshasa. The conference featured speakers who passionately emphasized the importance of self-investment and positive change. Among the speakers was Coach-Trainer Kirsten Tshika, who inspired women to be the architects of their destinies. Following the conference, a charity visit to the C.O.C orphanage was organized, benefiting 30 children with donations of essential items.
In Kalambo, IITA staff at the President O. Obasanjo Research Campus celebrated under the theme “Increase the resources needed for women and girls in peace for an equal Congo.” Imani Matabaro Aimée, a Lawyer, Gender consultant, and Former vice-president of the Civil Society of South-Kivu province, shared inspiring stories of women to encourage investment in women for their scientific, economic, and social progress. Notable women like Julienne Lusenge and Jeanine Mabunda, who have significantly impacted their respective fields, were highlighted.
IITA Rwanda organized a virtual celebration, hosting events emphasizing empowering women in decision-making roles for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and food security. A retired female colleague from IITA-Rwanda was honored, her journey serving as an inspiring tale of resilience and success. Dr Alice Kabeja from the Rwanda Agriculture Board (RAB) also shared insights on women’s contributions in diverse fields, stressing the importance of setting and achieving goals.

In Cameroon, the IITA office conducted various activities, including capacity building, sports, and discussions on women’s empowerment. These activities were designed to enhance the skills and knowledge of staff, promote physical well-being, and foster team spirit. A debate and presentation session centered on investing in women further enriched the celebration.
Lastly, IITA Burundi highlighted the advancements and investments in women’s progress, especially in agriculture. A representative of the Civil Society provided insights into women in the development sector, emphasizing their pivotal role in societal advancement and community development. A symbolic walk and other activities demonstrated unity and solidarity in the cause of women’s empowerment.
These celebrations across the Central Africa Hub highlighted the importance of empowering women and promoting gender equality in various sectors across Africa, echoing IITA-CGIAR‘s commitment to championing women’s rights and sustainable development.
