IITA, Democratic Republic of the Congo strengthen agricultural partnership with new MoU

As part of efforts to strengthen food security in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), a high-level delegation paid an exploratory visit 15-17 July, to IITACGIAR to discuss areas of aligning the institute’s research with the country’s agricultural agenda.

The Honorable Minister of Agriculture and Food Security for DR Congo, Muhindo Nzangi Butondo, accompanied by three provincial Ministers— Hon. Koy Taka Bijou (Tshopo Province), Hon. Kayoka Kabeya Doris (Lomami Province), and Hon. Pembelongo Bomilongo Jacob (Kasai Province)— met with IITA Senior Management and Scientists to discuss area of deepening collaboration in agricultural research and innovation in the region.

The visit which culminated in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between IITA and the Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo, marked a significant step toward strengthening cooperation in agricultural transformation, technology transfer, capacity development, and sustainable food systems.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, IITA Director General and CGIAR Regional Director for Continental Africa, Dr Simeon Ehui, reaffirmed the institute’s commitment to working closely with the DRC to harness science and innovation in addressing food insecurity, improving productivity, and creating economic opportunities for farmers.

“The future of African agriculture lies in strong partnerships that connect science with policy and practice. This collaboration reinforces our shared commitment to delivering research-driven solutions that improve livelihoods and strengthen food systems across the continent,” he said.

The DRC delegation, led by H.E. Muhindo Nzangi Butondo and accompanied by three provincial Ministers, toured several of IITA’s research facilities. The visitors interacted with scientists and explored the institute’s work in crop improvement, seed systems, sustainable farming practices, mechanization, digital agriculture, and other technologies designed to enhance agricultural productivity and resilience.

The visit also provided an opportunity for discussions on scaling proven innovations, strengthening the country’s national agricultural research systems, and accelerating the adoption of technologies that can support food security and economic development in the DRC.

The partnership underscores the shared vision of IITA and the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo to leverage science, innovation, and strategic collaboration to transform agriculture and improve the livelihoods of millions of farming households.

As IITA continues to work with governments and partners across Africa, the renewed agreement with DRC reflects IITA’s commitment to delivering science that responds to the continent’s most pressing agricultural challenges while supporting inclusive and sustainable development.

Olaosebikan, Olamide

Olamide Deborah Nwanze is a Senior Research Associate specializing in gender mainstreaming research to inform participatory and inclusive breeding, variety development, and seed systems policies regarding root, tuber, and banana (RTB) crops in the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture Headquarters, Ibadan, Nigeria. She is a PhD candidate at the University of Ibadan and holds an MSc and B. Agric in Agricultural Extension and Rural Development. Olamide is a fellow of the African Women in Agricultural Research and Development – Gender Responsive Agricultural Systems Policy (AWARD-GRASP) and the Gender Responsive Researchers Equipped for Agricultural Transformation (GREAT). She seeks to apply her gender-mainstreaming learnings, gender-responsive research, and policy development, and review expertise to facilitate women, youth, children, and vulnerable social group’s access to and adoption of agricultural Innovations that guarantee food, nutrition, income, and livelihood security in Africa. Her current roles include mentoring research fellows, development of guides and training manuals, implementation and adaptation of gender frameworks and tools, value chain actors’ engagement as citizen science partners, policy review and redesign, data management, and analysis. Her current research explores mixed methods and participatory and interdisciplinary approaches to capture and highlight gender dynamics, needs, preferences, and challenges stakeholders face within the agricultural livelihood value chain to prioritize gender-inclusive strategies in breeding programs, policy design, and implementation.

At IITA, she contributes to the implementation of the CGIAR Accelerated Breeding Initiative and Genetic Innovation Programs; participatory and gender research within the NextGen CassavaHarvestPlusRTBFoods, and Tricot-ClimMob 1000Farms Projects; and gender knowledge communication via the G-LENS webinar series, video documentary, policy briefspublications, and blogs.
