Cassava improvement at the East African Hub
Cassava is an essential source of calories in Eastern Africa’s lowlands and mid-altitudes, accounting for around 10% of global cassava production. It is collected across approximately 11.5 million hectares, with Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda contributing significantly to this output. Cassava consumption per capita is significant, with two major market segments (fresh and processed), showing importance in providing food security and supporting livelihoods. However, due to multiple production constraints, cassava root yields in East Africa are only 25-30% of their potential in farmers’ fields.
During significant outbreaks, the two most common viral diseases, cassava mosaic disease (CMD) and cassava brown streak disease (CBSD), can jointly cause up to 70% production losses. Their spread is further aggravated by essential pests such as whiteflies and mealybugs, which compound the situation. In contrast, environmental variables such as drought, decreased soil fertility, and heat stress further limit output.
To realise cassava’s full potential, we must address these obstacles with novel solutions. The cassava breeding program at the East African Hub is spearheading efforts to develop high-yielding, disease-resistant, and climate-resilient cassava varieties suited to the demands of farmers and markets. The program aims to raise cassava yields and improve the livelihoods of millions of farmers by utilising cutting-edge breeding techniques and regional collaboration. The program seeks to increase cassava productivity in Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda by developing and disseminating improved cassava cultivars. Compared to the benchmark, our improved varieties are expected to have a yield advantage of 10 to 18% when released as breakthrough products (BTP) throughout the region.
