Pri zagotavljanju svetovne oskrbe s prehrano kljucno vlogo igramo tudi Slovenci

imageMatija Obreza, diplomant Fakultete za elektrotehniko, računalništvo in informatiko Univerze v Mariboru, igra ključno vlogo pri zagotavljanju svetovne oskrbe s hrano. 29-letni računalniški programer iz Slovenj Gradca, v okviru Mednarodnega inštituta za tropske agrikulture (International Institute of Tropical Agriculture – IITA) s sedežem v Ibadanu v Nigeriji razvija programsko opremo, ki je ključnega pomena za dokumentacijo in ohranjanje genskega materiala za prihodnje generacije. Matija Obreza s svojim delom pomembno pripomore k lažjemu dostopu znanstvenikov do semen in genskih virov. Enostaven in pregleden dostop pa znanstvenikom omogoča hiter in učinkovit razvoj novih sort rastlin, ki so izjemnega pomena za boj proti lakoti in revščini, pa tudi sredstvo za preživetje v primeru katastrof globalnih razsežnosti. Mednarodni inštitut za tropske agrikulture je bil prvi, ki je na Svalbard na Norveškem, kjer bodo 26. februarja odprli t.i. »skladišče za sodni dan«, dostavil pošiljko vzorcev semen. V futuristično skladišče, ki je bilo ustanovljeno z namenom, da bo v primeru svetovne katastrofe zagotavljalo semena in genske vire za ponoven zagon pridelave hrane, je prispelo 21 zabojev, v katerih je 7.000 vzorcev semen iz 36 afriških držav. 330 kilogramov težko pošiljko sestavljajo semena kulturnih in divjih vrst benečanskega fižola, koruze, soje in burskih orehov oziroma arašidov. Skladišče oziroma banka na Svalbardu predstavlja zgolj prostor za shranjevanje zalog semen, ki se dobavljajo in posodabljajo iz pomembnih genskih bank, ki izhajajo iz inštitutov kot je IITA ter drugih organizacij, ki so del Konzularne skupine mednarodnega agrikulturnega raziskovanja (Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research – CGIAR). Matija Obreza, ki je za IITA v Nigeriji začel delati oktobra lani, je ob tem izjemno pomembnem dogodku povedal: “Na podoben način kot Svalbard varuje dejanske genske vire, se moje delo osredotoča na shranjevanje informacij o genskih virih, ki jih obenem poskušam narediti pregledne in lahko dostopne za znanstvenike.”
Slovenia’s Matija Obreza, a computer science graduate from the University of Maribor, is playing a key role in securing the world’s food supply. The Slovenj Gradec native is developing software that will help to document and preserve for future generations genetic material at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA). Obreza’s work at IITA is making it easier for scientists to access seeds and germplasm so that new plant varieties can be developed in the fight against world hunger. The institute’s consignment of seeds was the first to arrive for the ‘doomsday vault’ on Svalbard in Norway, which opens on February 26. Twenty-one boxes containing 7,000 seed samples from 36 African nations were sent to the futuristic vault intended to act as insurance so that food production can be restarted should there be a global catastrophe. The seeds, weighing 330kg (730lb), are made up of varieties of domesticated and wild cowpea, maize, soybean and bambara groundnut. But the bank is just a holding area – the seeds are being supplied and updated from the more important genebanks of groups such as IITA, a part of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). The 29-year-old Obreza, who began his work in October 2007, said: “In the same sense that Svalbard is protecting actual germplasm, I’m focusing on preserving the information about that germplasm while also trying to make it easily accessible for scientists.”

Olaosebikan, Olamide

Olamide Deborah Nwanze is a Senior Research Associate specializing in gender mainstreaming research to inform participatory and inclusive breeding, variety development, and seed systems policies regarding root, tuber, and banana (RTB) crops in the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture Headquarters, Ibadan, Nigeria. She is a PhD candidate at the University of Ibadan and holds an MSc and B. Agric in Agricultural Extension and Rural Development. Olamide is a fellow of the African Women in Agricultural Research and Development – Gender Responsive Agricultural Systems Policy (AWARD-GRASP) and the Gender Responsive Researchers Equipped for Agricultural Transformation (GREAT). She seeks to apply her gender-mainstreaming learnings, gender-responsive research, and policy development, and review expertise to facilitate women, youth, children, and vulnerable social group’s access to and adoption of agricultural Innovations that guarantee food, nutrition, income, and livelihood security in Africa. Her current roles include mentoring research fellows, development of guides and training manuals, implementation and adaptation of gender frameworks and tools, value chain actors’ engagement as citizen science partners, policy review and redesign, data management, and analysis. Her current research explores mixed methods and participatory and interdisciplinary approaches to capture and highlight gender dynamics, needs, preferences, and challenges stakeholders face within the agricultural livelihood value chain to prioritize gender-inclusive strategies in breeding programs, policy design, and implementation.

At IITA, she contributes to the implementation of the CGIAR Accelerated Breeding Initiative and Genetic Innovation Programs; participatory and gender research within the NextGen CassavaHarvestPlusRTBFoods, and Tricot-ClimMob 1000Farms Projects; and gender knowledge communication via the G-LENS webinar series, video documentary, policy briefspublications, and blogs.
