CGIAR and AARIEIs launch strategic partnership framework to drive agricultural transformation in Africa

At a pivotal side event titled “Strengthening CGIAR Engagement with African Agricultural Research, Innovation, and Education Institutions (AARIEIs) in research and scaling,” a new chapter in Africa’s agricultural transformation was officially launched with the presentation of the CGIAR-AARIEIs partnership engagement framework.

The framework, co-developed by Africa-based CGIAR centers and the African Agricultural Research, Innovation & Education Institutions (AARIEIs), is a strategic document that outlines the principles, priorities, and mechanisms for enhanced collaboration. It aims to strengthen institutional partnerships, foster knowledge exchange, and promote joint innovations addressing the continent’s pressing challenges, ranging from climate change and food insecurity to the need for sustainable food, land, and water development systems.

The event’s highlight was the signing of the partnership engagement framework agreement by representatives of CGIAR centers and AARIEIs. This formal commitment underscores a shared vision to accelerate the implementation of Africa’s science agenda for agriculture by aligning research and innovation efforts with the continent’s development goals.

At the event, leaders from CGIAR centers and AARIEIs emphasized the framework’s significance in providing a clear roadmap for collaboration, resource mobilization, and impact-driven research. The framework is expected to catalyze scaling agricultural technologies, building resilient food systems, and empowering African institutions to lead the transformation journey.

With discussions focusing on scaling pathways for CGIAR innovations, emphasizing the role of strategic partnerships, including the Technologies for African Agricultural Transformation (TAAT) program, participants emphasized the significance of aligning CGIAR’s research agenda with Africa’s policy frameworks, ensuring that agricultural innovations reach the last mile.

The new framework is not only a tool for partnership – it’s a commitment to Africa’s future through science, innovation, and shared purpose.

Olaosebikan, Olamide

Olamide Deborah Nwanze is a Senior Research Associate specializing in gender mainstreaming research to inform participatory and inclusive breeding, variety development, and seed systems policies regarding root, tuber, and banana (RTB) crops in the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture Headquarters, Ibadan, Nigeria. She is a PhD candidate at the University of Ibadan and holds an MSc and B. Agric in Agricultural Extension and Rural Development. Olamide is a fellow of the African Women in Agricultural Research and Development – Gender Responsive Agricultural Systems Policy (AWARD-GRASP) and the Gender Responsive Researchers Equipped for Agricultural Transformation (GREAT). She seeks to apply her gender-mainstreaming learnings, gender-responsive research, and policy development, and review expertise to facilitate women, youth, children, and vulnerable social group’s access to and adoption of agricultural Innovations that guarantee food, nutrition, income, and livelihood security in Africa. Her current roles include mentoring research fellows, development of guides and training manuals, implementation and adaptation of gender frameworks and tools, value chain actors’ engagement as citizen science partners, policy review and redesign, data management, and analysis. Her current research explores mixed methods and participatory and interdisciplinary approaches to capture and highlight gender dynamics, needs, preferences, and challenges stakeholders face within the agricultural livelihood value chain to prioritize gender-inclusive strategies in breeding programs, policy design, and implementation.

At IITA, she contributes to the implementation of the CGIAR Accelerated Breeding Initiative and Genetic Innovation Programs; participatory and gender research within the NextGen Cassava, HarvestPlus, RTBFoods, and Tricot-ClimMob 1000Farms Projects; and gender knowledge communication via the G-LENS webinar series, video documentary, policy briefs, publications, and blogs.
