In a groundbreaking collaborative effort, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research-Crops Research Institute (CSIR-CRI), Ghana, has joined forces with the IITA–CGIAR‘s Program for Seed System Innovation for Vegetatively-Propagated Crops in Africa (PROSSIVA) project to clean some Ghana yam varieties from diseases.

At the heart of this initiative is the transfer of untested seed yam materials from CSIR-CRI to IITA PROSSIVA, a strategic move to implement more effective seed quality assurance strategies. The overarching objective is to optimize disease elimination processes, ensuring a robust supply of disease-free planting materials while enhancing their handling procedures. The process will include the use of aseptic procedures in controlled environments. This concerted effort holds immense promise for revolutionizing yam production, a cornerstone of Ghana’s agricultural sector.
The ripple effect of the collaboration extends beyond the direct partnership, benefiting institutions, including private seed companies such as Hikmah Farms and Iribov-Ghana. These entities stand to gain access to superior-quality yam planting materials for multiplication and wide dissemination, amplifying the impact of this joint endeavor.

Yam viruses, particularly Yam Mosaic Virus (YMV), have ravaged yams, compromising tuber quality and weakening plant resilience against other diseases and environmental stressors. However, implementing good agricultural best practices, including virus-free planting materials, will be instrumental in achieving higher yields.
This collaborative venture represents a beacon of hope for the Ghana yam farming community, signifying a proactive stride towards a sustainable and resilient agricultural future. Beyond addressing the immediate challenges posed by viral infections, this partnership aims to enhance overall productivity and sustainability in yam cultivation to ensure a robust agricultural sector for the nation.
