IITA GoSeed set to launch first e-commerce site for breeder & foundation seed in Nigeria

IITA GoSeed, a unit of the IITA Business Incubation Platform (BIP), is launching the first e-commerce website in Nigeria soon, making breeder and foundation seed of the best varieties of important food crops available. Buyers can now order online at www.iitagoseed.com.

IITA GoSeed is responsible for the commercial promotion of the early generation seed of improved crop varieties generated by IITA and other international (CGIAR) centers across the globe. Focus crops include banana and plantain, cassava, cowpea, maize, rice, soybean, and yam. IITA GoSeed produces and sells high quality breeder and foundation seed of these crops to seed producers in the seed system in Nigeria and across Africa at affordable prices. Working with seed experts, seed producers, seed regulators, and other stakeholders across the various value chains, IITA GoSeed ensures the movement of seed to farmers to help transform their productivity, income, and livelihoods.

Access to clean, improved varieties of seed is a major challenge to achieving high productivity and profitability in agricultural production in Africa. Improved seed varieties may be unavailable, sold at high prices, or sold in adulterated forms to smallholder farmers in rural areas, thereby promoting the use of farmer-saved seed. This has contributed to consistently low yields and poor income levels, increased rural poverty, and underdevelopment in the sector.

IITA GoSeed is passionate about improving farmers’ access to clean seed and creating a viable seed ecosystem in Nigeria and across Africa. This first e-commerce site for breeder and foundation seed of the best varieties in Nigeria will take away the headache of locating a source of quality seed, and the stress of traveling from one part of the country to another to purchase seed. Locations of IITA GoSeed  fields can be accessed on the Seed Tracker via the website. After ordering online, buyers have the option of pick-up or home delivery.

Olaosebikan, Olamide

Olamide Deborah Nwanze is a Senior Research Associate specializing in gender mainstreaming research to inform participatory and inclusive breeding, variety development, and seed systems policies regarding root, tuber, and banana (RTB) crops in the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture Headquarters, Ibadan, Nigeria. She is a PhD candidate at the University of Ibadan and holds an MSc and B. Agric in Agricultural Extension and Rural Development. Olamide is a fellow of the African Women in Agricultural Research and Development – Gender Responsive Agricultural Systems Policy (AWARD-GRASP) and the Gender Responsive Researchers Equipped for Agricultural Transformation (GREAT). She seeks to apply her gender-mainstreaming learnings, gender-responsive research, and policy development, and review expertise to facilitate women, youth, children, and vulnerable social group’s access to and adoption of agricultural Innovations that guarantee food, nutrition, income, and livelihood security in Africa. Her current roles include mentoring research fellows, development of guides and training manuals, implementation and adaptation of gender frameworks and tools, value chain actors’ engagement as citizen science partners, policy review and redesign, data management, and analysis. Her current research explores mixed methods and participatory and interdisciplinary approaches to capture and highlight gender dynamics, needs, preferences, and challenges stakeholders face within the agricultural livelihood value chain to prioritize gender-inclusive strategies in breeding programs, policy design, and implementation.

At IITA, she contributes to the implementation of the CGIAR Accelerated Breeding Initiative and Genetic Innovation Programs; participatory and gender research within the NextGen Cassava, HarvestPlus, RTBFoods, and Tricot-ClimMob 1000Farms Projects; and gender knowledge communication via the G-LENS webinar series, video documentary, policy briefs, publications, and blogs.
