The Governor of Niger State, H.E. Mohammed Umaru Bago, paid a courtesy visit to the IITA headquarters in Ibadan recently to explore potential collaboration in agriculture and technology adoption. The visit marked a significant step toward strengthening ties between the government and IITA to enhance agricultural productivity, food security, and sustainable farming practices in Niger State.
During his visit, Governor Bago met with IITA’s Director General, Dr Simeon Ehui, and a team of leading scientists. The discussions focused on how Niger State can leverage IITA’s expertise and research innovations to drive agricultural transformation in the state.
Some of IITA’s existing technologies were presented to Governor Bago as part of the engagement, highlighting solutions in crop improvement, breeding, mechanization, and seed systems. The Governor expressed interest in deploying these solutions to enhance food production, improve farmers’ livelihoods, and boost economic development in Niger State.
During the visit, Governor Bago emphasized the state’s commitment to revolutionizing agriculture through strategic partnerships. “Niger State has vast agricultural potential, and we are determined to tap into the best technologies and expertise to drive productivity and food security. IITA has been at the forefront of agricultural research, and we look forward to collaborating on sustainable solutions for our farmers,” he stated.
In response, Dr Ehui reaffirmed IITA’s commitment to working with Niger State to scale up agricultural innovations. “We are excited about this engagement with Niger State and the opportunity to deploy our research for real impact. Through knowledge sharing and technology adoption, we can transform agriculture into a more productive and resilient sector for the benefit of millions,” he said.
This meeting sets the stage for future engagements between IITA and the Niger State Government, with both parties exploring frameworks for partnership. Potential areas of collaboration include capacity building for farmers, technology transfer, and policy support for agricultural sustainability in the state.
Governor Bago’s visit highlights the growing recognition of research-driven agriculture as a key driver of Nigeria’s economic growth and food security.
