Agricultural Livelihoods Restoration Project

  • Promote Conservation Agriculture (CA), integrated soil fertility management and production of vegetables for improved nutrition security and income generation;
  • Promote improved post-harvest management practices and locally adaptable processing technologies;
  • Train affected households on improved poultry, goat and sheep husbandry;
  • Introduce fuel-efficient clay stove technology and equipment;
  • Establish a resource facility to support the dissemination of information on technologies through training activities, awareness creation and other advisory services.

Technologies for African Agricultural Transformation Phase II

The development objective remains to “increase agricultural productivity and household incomes by expanding access to climate-resilient and productivity-increasing technologies in low-income RMCs across Africa by 2025”. Specifically, TAAT II is to “enhance agricultural productivity and policy reform to support the selected RMCs to implement the AEFPF”

Legume-based agro ecological intensification of maize and cassava cropping systems in Sub-Saharan Africa

The goal is promote scaling of legume-based agroecological intensification of smallholder maize and cassava cropping systems in SSA for water-food-energy nexus sustainability & improved livelihood resilience. The specific research and innovation objectives are: (1) To identify, develop and adapt legume-based agroecological intensification technologies and practices for accelerated scaling-out to smallholder farming and food systems to improve their: (1a) productivity, sustainability, resilience and adaptive capacity to climate variability and change; (1b) food and nutrition security and (1c) water use efficiency. (2) To identify, develop and adapt innovations for rural energy and labour efficiency (especially of women smallholders) transformations necessary to accelerate scaling out of legume-based agroecological intensification for improved livelihoods, employment, income and resilience of smallholder farming and food systems. (3) To identify, develop and adapt innovations for transformative shifts in rural bioeconomies by generating new enterprises and rural employment (especially youth and women entrepreneurship) from legume-derived products, services and co-products. (4) To identify and embed transformational scaling approaches and pathways (including policy and institutional options to enhance market opportunities for farmers through improved market information, farmer organization, and structured trade) for legume-based agroecological intensification to improve smallholder productivity/incomes, while transitioning to more sustainable farming and food systems

Tanzania Sustainable Soybean Initiative

The goal of this project is to improve food and nutritional security in Madagascar and Comoros by promoting agroecological farming practices and nutritious crop varieties.

Strengthening soybean crop improvement in Africa to accelerate development of a stream of climate-smart varieties for small-scale producers, enabling their income growth, improved nutrition, and national economic growth.

This project aims to modernize the IITA Soybean Breeding Program and increase genetic gain and varietal turnover in the farmers’ fields.

Resurrecting a role for roguing: pre-symptomatic detection with multispectral imaging to quantify and control the transmission of cassava brown streak disease

The project’s goal is to develop a field-usable multi-spectral imaging device for the early detection of cassava brown streak disease and to model the potential impacts of the application of this device on CBSD management programs in sub-Saharan Africa

This project aims to develop and validate chemically-amplified eLFA, integrate it with an NFC potentiostat to create disposable digital assays and establish protocols, software, and training for field testing and future large-scale production in East Africa.

The goal of this project is to develop Mchare bananas resistant to Foc races 1 and TR4 through mutation breeding, with field and greenhouse screenings for resistance and agronomic traits.

Olaosebikan, Olamide

Olamide Deborah Nwanze is a Senior Research Associate specializing in gender mainstreaming research to inform participatory and inclusive breeding, variety development, and seed systems policies regarding root, tuber, and banana (RTB) crops in the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture Headquarters, Ibadan, Nigeria. She is a PhD candidate at the University of Ibadan and holds an MSc and B. Agric in Agricultural Extension and Rural Development. Olamide is a fellow of the African Women in Agricultural Research and Development – Gender Responsive Agricultural Systems Policy (AWARD-GRASP) and the Gender Responsive Researchers Equipped for Agricultural Transformation (GREAT). She seeks to apply her gender-mainstreaming learnings, gender-responsive research, and policy development, and review expertise to facilitate women, youth, children, and vulnerable social group’s access to and adoption of agricultural Innovations that guarantee food, nutrition, income, and livelihood security in Africa. Her current roles include mentoring research fellows, development of guides and training manuals, implementation and adaptation of gender frameworks and tools, value chain actors’ engagement as citizen science partners, policy review and redesign, data management, and analysis. Her current research explores mixed methods and participatory and interdisciplinary approaches to capture and highlight gender dynamics, needs, preferences, and challenges stakeholders face within the agricultural livelihood value chain to prioritize gender-inclusive strategies in breeding programs, policy design, and implementation.

At IITA, she contributes to the implementation of the CGIAR Accelerated Breeding Initiative and Genetic Innovation Programs; participatory and gender research within the NextGen CassavaHarvestPlusRTBFoods, and Tricot-ClimMob 1000Farms Projects; and gender knowledge communication via the G-LENS webinar series, video documentary, policy briefspublications, and blogs.
