Creating Sustainable Youth MSMEs through Urban Farming

The goal of this project is to empower city-based graduate youths and early start-up MSMEs to become bankable enterprises, provide African youths with agribusiness technical skills and market networks, and offer professional mentorship to address uncertainties and risks in new enterprises.

Mitigating the Impacts of Cassava Virus Epidemics and their Whitefly Vectors in East, Central, and Southern Africa through Surveillance, Scaling of Digital Extension Tools, and IPM

The goal of this project is to enhance food security, increase income, and improve the livelihoods of smallholder cassava farmers by controlling the spread and mitigating the impacts of CBSD through the promotion and scaling of digital surveillance tools and the development of an IPM package for controlling whitefly vectors.

Agricultural transformation in Nigerian federal states and Togolese regions towards achieving Zero Hunger

The goal of the project is to contribute to the zero hunger initiatives within the rice and cassava value chains in Nigeria and Togo, focusing on technology and innovation as well as policy analysis and engagement for technology uptake.

Locations:  Togo 

Development and promotion of aflatoxin biological control in the groundnut, sorghum, sesame, and cottonseed value chains to improve public health and enhance food security in Sudan.

The goal of this project is to improve the income and nutritional health of farming families and generate wealth in the groundnut, sorghum, cottonseed, and sesame value chains by developing and commercializing cost-effective biological control products for managing aflatoxin.

Locations:  Sudan 

The rural-urban nexus: Establishing a nutrient loop to improve city region food system resilience (RUNRES)

To establish in each rural-urban region (i.e., Bukavu, DRC; Kamonyi, Rwanda; Arba Minch, Ethiopia; Msunduzi, South Africa) solution-oriented and transdisciplinary innovation platforms to demonstrate that innovations for value chain development and waste recycling can serve as a catalyst to generate a flow of resources between the rural-urban nexus that will improve the resilience of regional food systems.

SGP-RTB – Roots Tubers and Bananas Breeding: a consolidated investment

The goal of this project is to develop market-preferred, gender-sensitive, and climate-resilient crop varieties to alleviate poverty, enhance food and nutrition security, and improve the quality of life for smallholder farmers, processors, and consumers in rural and urban areas.

Virus Resistant Cassava for Africa Deployment

The goal of this project is to provide smallholder farmers in Kenya and Rwanda with high-performing, disease-resistant cassava varieties and establish effective cassava seed systems to improve food and economic security.

This project aims to establish ACI-VSS as a platform for bringing together seed experts, policymakers, and entrepreneurs to promote seed system innovation and development.

The goal of the project is to promote food and nutrition security and resilient food systems in Rwanda by enhancing cassava productivity, diversifying cassava utilization through value-added innovations, and supporting coordinated investment in the cassava value chain.

Olaosebikan, Olamide

Olamide Deborah Nwanze is a Senior Research Associate specializing in gender mainstreaming research to inform participatory and inclusive breeding, variety development, and seed systems policies regarding root, tuber, and banana (RTB) crops in the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture Headquarters, Ibadan, Nigeria. She is a PhD candidate at the University of Ibadan and holds an MSc and B. Agric in Agricultural Extension and Rural Development. Olamide is a fellow of the African Women in Agricultural Research and Development – Gender Responsive Agricultural Systems Policy (AWARD-GRASP) and the Gender Responsive Researchers Equipped for Agricultural Transformation (GREAT). She seeks to apply her gender-mainstreaming learnings, gender-responsive research, and policy development, and review expertise to facilitate women, youth, children, and vulnerable social group’s access to and adoption of agricultural Innovations that guarantee food, nutrition, income, and livelihood security in Africa. Her current roles include mentoring research fellows, development of guides and training manuals, implementation and adaptation of gender frameworks and tools, value chain actors’ engagement as citizen science partners, policy review and redesign, data management, and analysis. Her current research explores mixed methods and participatory and interdisciplinary approaches to capture and highlight gender dynamics, needs, preferences, and challenges stakeholders face within the agricultural livelihood value chain to prioritize gender-inclusive strategies in breeding programs, policy design, and implementation.

At IITA, she contributes to the implementation of the CGIAR Accelerated Breeding Initiative and Genetic Innovation Programs; participatory and gender research within the NextGen Cassava, HarvestPlus, RTBFoods, and Tricot-ClimMob 1000Farms Projects; and gender knowledge communication via the G-LENS webinar series, video documentary, policy briefs, publications, and blogs.
